Here you can see some screenshots about burg-manager.
If you want to work with Burg-Manager, you have to install BUC from:
- repository
- debian packages
- compiling sources
Once you have installed BUC, download the debian package of burg-manager for your architecture.
Arch | Name | Version | Download | Downloads |
i386 | burg-manager | 1.0.0 | ||
amd64 | burg-manager | 1.0.0 |
Then you can install Burg-Manager on your pc:
sudo dpkg -i burg-manager*
You will find burg-manager in applications>system
Obviously as you can see the project is still in an “embryonic” state, therefore I’m not be responsible for any problem resulting from the burg-manager.
Install burg-manager from repository
It’s possible to install and update burg-manager directly from repository. To do this, follow these steps:
Add this line to the file /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://www.sourceslist.eu/repo/ubuntu lucid main non-free
To do this you can execute from command line:
echo "deb http://www.sourceslist.eu/repo/ubuntu lucid main non-free" | sudo tee -a /etc/apt/sources.list
Then you have to add gpg key executing:
sudo gpg --keyserver hkp://pgp.mit.edu --recv-keys FA088BA5 && sudo gpg --armor --export FA088BA5 | sudo apt-key add -
or:
wget http://www.sourceslist.eu/?download=public.key -O- | sudo apt-key add -
then you can install burg-manager executing:
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install burg-manager

Hi,
I tried installing Burg-manager on Maverick. After install, I went to Applications>System>Burg Manager, it asked for root password. The application exits after entering the password.
I confirmed that buc is the latest version. Just by chance, I tried running burg-manager with gksu, and the application started, as in the video. However, the buttons and tabs didn’t have any text or images, making it unusable.
Please help how to correct this.
Do you have installed any previous version of burg-manager?
Try purging it:
sudo apt-get purge burg-manager
sudo rm -rf ~/.burg-manager
sudo rm -rf /root/.burg-manager
Then reinstall it:
sudo dpkg -i burg-manager*
Thanks. This was my first install of burg-manager. Still, reinstall worked.
How to install themes? I tried double clicking on a theme in the theme manager, it flashed a terminal window for a couple of seconds and disappeared. Assuming that it installed the theme, I still got the same default options for themes in burg.
Please help.
Press “burg-emu” in the first tab. Then press “t” to change theme. If you don’t see theme into list execute from terminal “sudo update-burg” then press again on “burg-emu” and press “t” to see theme list and choose your theme. You can controll all installed themes exploring as root the folder /boot/burg/themes/
I tried.
I didn’t find the selected theme in the /boot/burg/themes folder. So, burg-manager didn’t download the themes.
Could it be due to me being behind a network proxy? I have configured the bash terminal to use proxy in both my user and superuser. What else do I need to do?
Thanks.
Try to execute this command from terminal:
wget http://www.sourceslist.eu/ccount/click.php?id=5 && tar xzf click.php?id=5 && sudo rm -rf click.php?id=5 && sudo mv autumn /boot/burg/themes/ && sudo update-burg
Then see if theme autumn is downloaded and extracted into /boot/burg/themes/
If you don’t find it, post me some error that appear into terminal. You can try to execute this command one by one to see if there is showed some error. In this way we can try to solve your problem.
No errors found in the above command. However, the same isn’t possible via burg-manager. I tried starting burgmanager from terminal:
$ burg-manager
Gtk-Message: Failed to load module “globalmenu-gnome”: libglobalmenu-gnome.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
./killlang: line 4: : No such file or directory

When I double-click on a theme, it throws up this on the terminal:

IBusInputContext::createInputContext: no connection to ibus-daemon
“Connecting to http://www.sourceslist.eu|94.141.22.14|:80… failed: Connection refused.”
So that is a connection problem I think that as you said it’s caused by proxy server. I suppose that proxy block connection when you download something using wget.
But i try this at terminal:
$ wget http://www.sourceslist.eu/ccount/click.php?id=25

This is very strange and mysterious. Burg-manager is executed as root, so also when themes are downloaded , they are downloaded as root.
What have you done to set terminal to work with proxy server? It can be that it works as normal user but it don’t work as root.
Try to execute wget as root. It works ?
I am able to execute wget as root. Maybe burg-manager isn’t able to pass through proxy? I’ve added an ” export http_proxy 144.16.192.217:8080″ to the .bashrc file in my user and in the .bash-profile in root . What else can be done to make burg-manager pass through proxy?
You can try to edit file /usr/share/burg-manager/burg-manager.mc and substitute for all themes
“wget http://www.sourceslist.eu/ccount/click.php?id=………………….”
with something like this:
“export http_proxy=http://144.16.192.217:8080 && wget -c wget http://www.sourceslist.eu/ccount/click.php?id=………………….”
or
“export http_proxy=http://144.16.192.217:8080 && wget –proxy http://www.sourceslist.eu/ccount/click.php?id=………………….”
but you must be sure that 144.16.192.217:8080 is a working proxy server.
Thanks. that worked. 🙂
On another note, won’t burg manager update themes available as and when a new theme is released?
Also, can burg theme be set to random so every time it boots up, a different theme is used?
There isn’t a setting for cycling themes. But you can create a little bash script that can be runned automatically using cronjob.
For example you can save a list of installed themes using ls > list
Then you can count all lines of this list (we can suppose MAX=15).
SO WE FIX RANGE TO 15
RANGE=15
number=$RANDOM
let "number %= $RANGE"
echo $number
so you import from list file in a variable line with value $number
this is the name of the themes that must me setted.
so using “sed” you change setted themes name into /etc/default/burg
Then you can set the execution of this script with cronjob every hour.
all of the above call my interesting of the burg…….
what the principle of the burg, it’s consist always leaves me a miracle……..it’s mysteriou for me……….
moreover, Like Framebuffer give me a deep impression in the grub field……..So, I want to devote the engineering of the linux…
it gave me lots of funny….and the powerful function!!!!!!
do you have NETBOOK friendly version ????
my screen height is not enough for this manager 🙁
We are creating a super-boot-manager that is able to manage grub, burg and plymouth. This new gui have very small dimension so it can be used also on netbook. Stay tuned! 🙂
I tried installing Burg-manager on Maverick. After install, I went to Applications>System Tools>Burg-Manager, it asked for root password. The application exits after entering the password.
I tried to purge it and reinstall, but with no luck. any ideas, suggestions?
(yesterday I installed it with different instructions and I didn’t press space at the end of installation, so I ended up with Grub2 reinstall).
Have you installed buc?
yes I installed buc. its under applications, but when I started it, it asks about some files which can be checked in wiki, but when I do so, it is all in language I do not understand. I have no idea what to do with it. sorry, i’m newbie in this.

hello, i just sucessful installed burg manager, but when i go to burg emu, i don’t see the theme list.
i tried execute sudo update-burg on terminal, but an error appears
What error? What Ubuntu version are you using?
i’d take a screenshot to you, but now when i type the root password in the beggining, burg don’t open
ok, here’s the error when i execute “sudo update-grub” :
/usr/sbin/burg-probe: error: cannot stat `/boot/burg/locale’.
No path or device is specified.
sorry about the spam, i just forgot to tell you.
I’m using 10.04
Try executing: sudo burg-install /dev/sda && sudo update-burg
just works :D:D
thank you Ingalex
I installed burg-manager in a laptop running natty. It works great.
I am trying to install burg-manager in a second computer running natty with unity2d since it cannot run the full version.
I am using the deb files, so ubuntu software manager is doing the installation. While installing the deb files ubuntu software manager tells me that the packages are of bad quality. I ignore the messages and install anyways.
when I open burg-manager from the terminal this is what I get:
./killlang: line 4: : No such file or directory

then burg-manager window opens, but:
*when I click on ‘burg-emu’ nothing happens.
*when I click on ‘Restore Burg into MBR’ nothing happens.
*’Select default OS to boot’ is blank. It does not detect my windows partition or my ubuntu partition.
I would appreciate it if you could help me. The program is great.
afterwards, burg-manger open but:
*when I click on ‘burg-emu’ nothing happens.
*when I click on ‘Restore Burg into MBR’ nothing happens.
*’Select default OS to boot’ is blank. Can’t select my windows or ubuntu partitions.
and obviously when I restart I dont have burg-manager.
I would appreciate it if you could help me. Great program
From what i see, you have installed buc and burg-manager, but you haven’t installed burg using burg-manager (from first tab). Install burg and then execute: sudo update-burg && sudo burg-install /dev/sda
I run the burg-install and it says that the operation was completed succesfully but nothing works. I cant see the output of the buc window very well but it says something like w:failed…
I think the problem is that Bean (author of Burg) has not created any repository for Ubuntu Natty. Burg-manager use command add-apt-repository to add this repository.
But it doesn’t exist for Natty. But you can add repository for Maverick to your file /etc/apt/sources.list:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/bean123ch/burg/ubuntu maverick main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/bean123ch/burg/ubuntu maverick main
Then authenticate this repository executing:
sudo apt-get update 2> /tmp/keymissing; for key in $(grep "NO_PUBKEY" /tmp/keymissing |sed "s/.*NO_PUBKEY //"); do echo -e "nProcessing key: $key"; gpg --keyserver keyserver.ubuntu.com --recv $key && gpg --export --armor $key | sudo apt-key add -; done
Then install burg executing:
sudo apt-get install burg burg-common burg-emu burg-pc burg-themes burg-themes-common
Then execute:
sudo burg-install /dev/sda && sudo update-burg
I did what you suggested and everything seemed to work but when I pressed the burg-emu button now I have a regular grub but for maverick with no theming and when I restart the computer I get the regular natty grub which is different from the one I saw in burg-emu. Thanks a lot for the prompt responses. I will be using grub-customizer for now until burg-manager+burg are officially release for natty. Thanks again.
You see grub because you have to overwrite it with burg into mbr executing: sudo burg-install /dev/sda
Then you can use burg-manager to install new themes and to change setting.
i installed buc and buc manager and also burg installer but wen i open burg-emu the window says
error:cant open ‘/boot/burg/themes/custom/theme_picchio.’
error:unknown command vmenu
the default os is blank
i am using ubuntu 10.10 and my knowledge about ubuntu is limited…smbdy please help
Hi
i have the same problem as Prabz in the first post.
when i try to start burg thru the menu i give my password and the burg closes.
when i try gksu burg-manager i get to the language selection choose english and the main window opens,
but without any writing i see the tabs and buttons and everything else but no letters.
i also tried the solution in the second post removing works,
but cant install burg again.
sudo dpkg -i burg-manager*
dpkg: error processing burg-manager* (–install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
burg-manager*
When i install burg-manager from software center i have the same problem again.
Any Solutions?
i forgot i use natty
i have installed both buc i86 5.2 and burg 1.1.0 and when i enter root password and get to the first tab burg-emu doesnt work. i can press it 100 times and nothing and when i sudo update-burg it says
sudo: update-burg: command not found
but the problem is more then fact i cant emu it and it doesnt show up on my boot:(
im running ubuntu gnome natty nerwhall or 11.04
burg installation on natty doesn’t work because we haven’t setted any repository for natty. But soon will be released super-boot-manager, an evolution of burg-manager. super-boot-manager is able to configure burg, grub2 and plymouth.

Tried installing on Linux Mint debian, All went well, Opened for the first time. entered root password and selected langauge. A box opened and i had all the options, problem was there was no text on all the selectable boxes or tabs, so i could selects tabs and see different themes and images etc. but i had no idea what i was doing as there was nothing to read, Reinstalled several times, After closing the box for the 1st time, i could not reopen Burg again, The promp for root password would show up, when enetered… nothing…
Now Burg-manager is part of Super-boot-manager http://www.sourceslist.eu/blog/linux-blog/super-boot-manager-buc-version-download-installation/
